Hawk golf boys compete at War Eagle Conference Tournament
The Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn boys golfers came in with a score of 408 in competition at the War Eagle Conference Tournament was held May 1 at The Ridge Golf Club in Sioux Center. That represented the total strokes of the Hawks’ top four scorers over the 18 hole layout.
HMS was last among the 11 teams, finishing one stroke behind Trinity Christian. Akron-Westfield repeated as tournament champion after shooting a 345. Remsen St. Mary’s was second at 358.
“We shot fairly well on the front nine, but our lack of experience overall and the tough conditions made it a rough day,” commented Hawk coach Mark Japenga. “However we did battle well and learned from the experience. We will continue to get better and work on our skill sets. The kids definitely got better in a lot of areas and persevered through some very difficult conditions.”
Jack Mastbergen shot a 96, which was the low round for the Hawks. Other scoring for HMS showed Lucas Kroese with a 100, Aiden Bush with a 104, Blake Meendering with a 108, Charlie Conway with a 118 and Slayton McCarter with a 124.

The Tourney provided the opportunity for the Hawks to settle a conference dual. Using scores from the first nine holes, HMS defeated Trinity Christian 195-205 with Mastbergen, Bush and Conway each earning a medal.
