The Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn boys saw their golf season come to an end at the Class 2A Sectional Tournament held May 10 at Rolling Hills Country Club in Hull. The Hawks shot 415 in the 18-hole tourney and finished eighth out of the eight teams competing.
Boyden-Hull posted the low team total of 305. Second was OABCIG with a 318. Because the Comets were the host school, third place Sibley-Ocheyedan (332 total) also advanced to Monday’s District Tournament at Emerald Hills in Arnolds Park.
Individual District qualifiers were Kaden Barrett of Hinton, who fired a round of 81, and West Lyon’s Korey McKenney, who shot an 82.
For the Hawks it was senior Lucas Kroese leading the way with a 98. Both sophomore Jack Mastbergen and senior Charlie Conway completed the 18 holes in 105 strokes. Shooting 107 was freshman Aiden Bush. Rounding out the Hawk contingent were two sophomores as Slayton McCarter carded a 108 and Blake Meedering shot 111.
“The kids did a good job of staying focused and doing what they could in scoring in districts,” noted HMS coach Mark Japenga. “I appreciated their willingness to stay composed and battle. I also appreciate the four years that Charlie and Lucas gave to the program, Lucas shot the low score for the team and Charlie had the second lowest. It was good for them to finish strong. We hope to continue to improve and play better golf next year.”
Also ending their time with the HMS golf program are seniors Ethan Baker and Caison Kruger.
