HMS golfers drop final WEC dual to Akron-Westfield girls
The Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn girls played the last of this season’s War Eagle Conference golf duals on May 8 when they matched up against Akron-Westfield at the Akron Golf Club. The Westerners, who finished on top of this year’s team standings, defeated HMS 204-221.
Akron-Westfield’s Josie Smith won medalist honors after shooting a 48. The Hawks’ Gracie Knobloch was one of three golfers to record a 51, the second-lowest score of the day. She received the third-place medal. The other rounds for HMS were a 54 from Elise Haack, a 55 from Morgan Grooters, a 61 from Kinsey Schirmer and a 66 from Abby Kunzman.
“The girls didn’t come in with as low of scores as a team at Akron but I saw a lot of good things,” remarked Hawk coach Cheryl Kroese. “We had a rain delay that took some of our momentum away but it was good to see a different course as we prepare for regionals this week.”
With the conclusion of the duals, the ranking of the War Eagle Conference players was finalized. Points are awarded based on both the dual meets and the WEC Tourney. Among those earning all-conference honors were three Hawks: Schirmer in sixth place, Knobloch in 10th and Haack in 17th. “These girls have worked extremely hard all season,” noted Kroese. “So awesome to have three of them make all-conference honors! Kinsey and Gracie placed in the top 10 in conference points to earn First Team and Elise was in the top 20 to make Second Team! Congrats to them all! Very much deserved!”
