Hawk golf girls move on in Regional Tourney play
The season goes on for the Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn golf girls. HMS was one of three teams to advance as Primghar Golf and Country Club hosted the Class 1A Regional Tourney on May 12.
The Hawks came in at 418 strokes. That put them in third place, one stroke behind runner-up South O’Brien. Because the Wolverines were one of the two teams which advance but were also the host school, the third place team also moves on. That means that HMS and South O’Brien both join Newell-Fonda (first with 372 strokes) at the Region 2 Final Wednesday, May 17 at Spring Valley Golf Course in Livermore. The top two teams advance on to the State Meet.
The Hawks’ Gracie Knobloch was also one of the top six individuals at Primghar. In fact, her 18-hole round of 89 was the second-lowest of the meet. The only lower round was the 85 fired by North Union’s Olivia Von Bank. The rounds for the other HMS golfers showed Kinsey Schirmer with a 108, Elise Haack with a 109, Morgan Grooters with a 112 and Abby Kunzman with a 122.
“I’m extremely proud of the girls for advancing to the next round!” commented HMS coach Cheryl Kroese. “Gracie had an excellent day, putting together two solid rounds to lead us. Each of the ladies had some really nice aspects to their game and in anything, we still have parts of the game we need to work on. It was exciting to see Morgan come in her second round with a 52, which is her season low. I’m looking forward to traveling to the Spring Valley Golf Course on Wednesday!”
On the team side, North Union was fourth with a 444 score and Harris-Lake Park finished fifth at 449. Not fielding full teams were GTRA, Storm Lake St. Mary’s and West Bend-Mallard.
