Royals top HMS in five innings
MMCRU’s Cody Evans struck out eight batters and allowed only two hits while the Royals bats brought the game to an early conclusion in a 12-2 victory over Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn May 24 at Remsen. The host team racked up 12 hits and enjoyed a six-run third inning before ending the game with four runs in the fifth.
“MMCRU really hit the ball well and they put us in a lot of different situations,” said HMS head coach Jeremy Gloden. “I thought our defense was better, but still some things we can improve on. The big thing right now is trying to find more production from our lineup. We need to be able to put more balls in play in order to score more runs.”
The Hawks’ first hit came in the fourth inning when Tyson Tessum led off with a double. He went to third on Bradley Van Beek’s groundout to the pitcher and scored on a passed ball. The fifth inning began with a walk to Ben Waddell. He moved up a base when Trenton Vollink hit a ground ball to second. Waddell got to third on a passed ball. Tessum then singled with Waddell coming home.
Tanner Tesch was given the start for HMS and went 4-1/3 innings, throwing 93 pitches. He allowed 11 runs on 10 hits. He walked six batters and struck out two. Evan Eilers took the mound to face four batters. He yielded two hits and one unearned run.
HMS made six errors and left five runners on base. The Royals stranded six.
