Hawks go 1-2 at Sheldon Softball Tourney
Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn picked up one win, sandwiched between a pair of losses, as the team participated in the Sheldon Softball Tournament June 3 at Sheldon. The victory came at the expense of the host Orabs by a 6-1 score. The Hawks lost to West Lyon and to Sergeant Bluff-Luton by identical 10-0 scores. The results put HMS at 6-4 on the season.
West Lyon 10, HMS 0
The Wildcats hit a pair of home runs to help them power past the Hawks. Starting pitcher Kamryn Ebel worked 2-2/3 innings and was relieved by Kinsey Schirmer who tossed the remaining three. Each gave up five earned runs and each struck out a batter. Ebel walked five, hit three batters and allowed three hits. Schirmer yielded five hits and walked four. There was one HMS error. The half-dozen Hawks who each notched a single were Abby Otto, Eliza Tewes, Cadence Klein, Abby Kunzman, Ebel and Schirmer.
HMS 6, Sheldon 1
It took until the fourth inning for the Hawks to push one of their numerous baserunners across the plate. That opened the floodgates with HMS scoring all six of its runs in that frame. The Orabs got their only tally in the sixth inning. Gracie Knobloch went the distance to get the win, allowing only five hits. The run was earned. She struck out four batters, walked one and hit one. Knobloch also benefited from a spotless defense. Tewes went 3-for-4 at the plate with a run scored and two batted in. Kunzman went 2-for-3 and Schirmer 2-for-4. Each scored a run. It was aces wild for Otto with a hit, an RBI and a run scored. Addy Sheeler and Frankie Mohni had a hit apiece and Sheeler scored a run. Knobloch added an RBI and a run scored and Morgan Grooters contributed an RBI.
SBL 10, HMS 0
The Warriors out-hit HMS 11-4. They hung crooked numbers on the scoreboard twice with three runs in the fourth and four in the sixth. For the Hawks, Knobloch recorded two singles and Otto and Klein one apiece. Schirmer pitched all 5-2/3 innings, walking four batters, hitting two and striking out one. HMS was guilty of four errors.
