Hawk bats found wanting in loss to Akron-Westfield
Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn needed the offense to respond to an early salvo from Akron-Westfield. But the bats contained only two hits on the night and HMS dropped the War Eagle Conference tilt to the Westerners 8-0 June 5 at Hartley.
“I liked how we kept ourselves in it after giving up three right away in the first,” commented Hawk head coach Jeremy Gloden. “However, our bats continue to struggle and we need to keep working to find a way to get them going more consistently in order to give ourselves a chance.”
Both HMS hits occurred in the fourth. Tyson Tessum led off the inning with a single but was erased on a 6-4-3 double play. Jacob Cates followed with a base hit and Bradley Van Beek drew a walk. The inning ended on a bouncer to short. The Hawks left a total of three runners on base while Akron-Westfield stranded seven.
Tessum handled the pitching chores for the first four innings. He yielded eight hits and five runs. Three of the runs were earned. Tessum walked two batters and struck out one. Tanner Tesch scaled the mound to start the fifth inning. He finished the game, allowing three runs (two earned) on two hits. Tesch recorded six strikeouts, two walks and one hit batter. HMS committed the game’s only error.
