Hawk teams each place third at Cherokee meet
Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn opened the season with a pair of third-place team finishes at the Deb Hankens Cross Country Meet held August 24 at Cherokee Golf & Country Club. The starting time for the meet was moved from afternoon to evening due to the hot and humid weather conditions.
In each of the two races HMS placed two individuals among the top 13 competitors. On the girls side Alexis Croatt and Gracie Knobloch were in contact with other throughout the race. In the end it was Croatt finishing three one-hundredths of a second ahead of her HMS teammate. Croatt was ninth and Knobloch tenth. George Vargas earned a fourth-place finish in the boys race. Crossing the finish line in 13th was Ryan Grotluschen.
The boys’ 67 points placed them behind MVAOCOU and Cherokee and ahead of Ridge View and South O’Brien. Other individual results for the Hawks showed Aiden Bush in 17th place, Damian Dodge in 19th. Blaine Finster in 25th.
Cherokee won the girls competition with 23 points and Ridge View was second with 47. Helping HMS finish with 61 points were Clara Funk, who finished 18th, Kamryn Ebel, who was 19th, and Jocelyn Abonce, who finished 25th.
A total of five Hawk harriers competed at the JV level where Easton Teal turned in a runner-up finish. The other placings were Parker Salton in 12th, Carter Dolphin in 13th and Moises Gonzalez in 14th. The girls race saw Kam Visser take 20th place.
