Hawks come away with one win at Spencer Tourney
Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn got the volleyball season officially underway August 22 with its participation in the Spencer Early Bird Tournament. The Tourney carried Spencer’s name, but it was actually played at Okoboji High School in Milford due to the lack of air conditioning at Spencer Fieldhouse.
Joining the Hawks in Pool A were Manson NW Webster and the tourney host Tigers. HMS began with a narrow 2-0 loss to the Cougars. Set scores were 21-19 and 21-18. The Hawks rebounded to defeat Spencer 2-1. HMS took the first set 21-11 but saw the Tigers claim the second 21-17. The deciding third set wound up 15-11 in favor of the Hawks.
The Hawks placed third in their pool. That set up a match-up with the third place team in Pool B, South O’Brien. The Wolverines topped HMS twice, by identical 21-13 scores.
Kylee Schiphoff helped keep the Hawks in the match with Manson NW Webster, contributing 10 kills. Frankie Mohni recorded 10 assists while Moriah Otto made one solo block, assisted on two others and led in digs with nine. Lindsey Van Es and Abigail Otto each contributed four digs. Eliza Tewes was 14-of-15 serving.
Kill leaders against Spencer were Schiphoff with five and Abby Douma and Moriah Otto each with two. Mohni supplied eight assists. Digging up six balls apiece were Kinsey Schirmer, Abigail Otto and Mohni. Abigail Otto’s 15-of-16 serving effort included six aces.
Douma registered five kills in the loss to the Wolverines. Mohni’s assist total was eight. Schiphoff notched one block and a pair of block assists. Abigail Otto led in digs with six. Schirmer was successful on 10 of 11 serves and served up a pair of aces.
