Hawk harriers compete in two meets last week
Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn runners participated in a pair of meets during the previous week. On September 25 they traveled to Alta Golf and Country Club for the Alta-Aurelia Cross Country Meet. That was followed on September 28 by the South O’Brien Cross Country Meet run at Paullina Golf Club on Mill Creek.
“Both meets proved positive steps as we get closer to finishing up our regular season,” commented HMS cross country coach Kirsten Taylor. “Alta was highlighted by both of our senior girls running PR’s.” Alexis Croatt placed 19th in 23:13.63 and Jocelyn Abonce was 40th with a time of 25:47.20. “I am proud of Lexi and Jocelyn’s willingness to battle through each race,” said the coach.
Taylor noted that the Hawk boys finished as a team sixth out of 13 against some great competition and larger schools. As he has all season, George Vargas set the pace for HMS, finishing 11th overall.
At South O’Brien, Vargas led the boys squad with a seventh-place finish to take fourth as a team. “Our girls battled through tough competition, and were highlighted by Lexi’s 12th-place finish,” remarked Taylor. “She ran very determined this week.”
The frequency of competition lessens at this point in the schedule. “Our team is looking forward to the next few weeks, as we only have one meet per week,” reported Taylor. “That helps with both our recovery and training. Looking forward to our last regular season competition next Thursday at GLR.”
