Hawk girls score go-ahead points late to edge Trinity Christian


Kylee Schiphoff converted a tie-breaking three-point play with 1:35 left in the game and Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn held on for a 51-49 victory over Trinity Christian December 1 at Hartley. The Tigers had two shots at tying the game in the final seconds but both went astray. With a second consecutive win, HMS evened its record at 2-2.
Each of the first three quarters ended with the teams tied. When Schiphoff hit the basket and added the free throw the Hawks went ahead 50-47. A bucket with 45 seconds remaining drew Trinity Christian within a point. Gracie Knobloch hit the second of two free throws with 18 seconds left to give HMS a two-point advantage.
Schiphoff finished with 13 points but Moriah Otto topped the Hawk point column with 14. The two were also big on the boards with Schiphoff collecting 11 rebounds and Otto eight. Abby Douma continued to be a defensive presence inside with seven blocked shots against the Tigers. Knobloch recorded both three assists and three steals.
Rounding out the HMS scoring were Douma with seven points, Lindsey Van Es with six, Knobloch and Eliza Tewes with four apiece and Frankie Mohni with three.
The shooting accuracy differed little between the teams as the Hawks shot 35 percent (17-of-48) and Trinity 34 percent (21-of-61.) Each team managed five three-point baskets. The big edge for HMS came at the free throw line where the Hawks were 12-of-23 and Trinity 2-of-6. HMS committed 16 turnovers compared to 12 for the Tigers.
