The Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn boys finished fourth as a group of five War Eagle Conference track and field teams got together April 11 at Paullina for the South O’Brien Mid-Season Meet. The Hawks’ 65 team points put them ahead of West Sioux but left them short of the totals put up by MMCRU, South O’Brien and George Little Rock.
Seniors led the way for HMS with Bryce Ortega winning the shot put, Jacob Cates placing second in the discus and George Vargas running to a second-place finish in the 1600 meter run. In addition, Vargas joined Nathaniel Ball, Blaine Finster and Ryan Grotluschen on the runner-up 4×800 relay.
The sprint medley relay quartet of Ethan Wiersma, Graham Lux, Damian Dodge and Carter Dolphin finished third. Fourth place was earned by Finster in the 1600, Ethan Wiersma in the 110 hurdles, the 4×400 relay of team of Carter Dolphin, Graham Lux, Ball and Grotluschen and the distance medley relay group of Wiersma, Dolphin, Grotluschen and Vargas.
