Outdoor track and field became a reality for the 2024 Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn boys April 8 as they competed at the Unity Co-ed Invite. The Hawks finished sixth at the Invite which was held on the campus of Northwestern College in Orange City. The local teams lead the way as MOC-Floyd Valley was team champ and Unity Christian the runner-up.
HMS scored well in the throwing events. In the discus Jacob Cates was second and Adam Schierholz third. Bryce Ortega took third in the shot put with Cates placing fifth.
On the track, fourth-place finishes were recorded by Carter Dolphin in the 200 meters and George Vargas in the 3200. Also placing third were the 4×400 relay unit of Graham Lux, Damian Dodge, Dolphin and Ryan Grotluschen and the 4×800 relay group of Dodge, Nathaniel Ball, Dolphin, Grotluschen.
