Hawk golf boys fall to South O’Brien

South O’Brien equaled it’s second-lowest team score of the season in a 186-203 victory over the Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn boys. The War Eagle Conference dual was played April 18 on a cold and windy Sanborn Golf and Country Club layout.
A highlight for HMS was junior Aiden Bush winning the third place medal after firing a round of 46. The other three medals went to the Wolverines. Freshman Eli Mastbergen was the next low golfer for the Hawks with a round of 51. Two other freshmen, Kolby Douma and Talan Zearing, each shot 53, followed by juniors Jack Mastbergen at 54 and Blake Meedering at 55.
“I am happy with the way our kids are battling and working through some adversity,” commented HMS coach Mark Japenga. “Some of our younger golfers are really getting some good experience and lowering their scores which is good to see. We need to make sure that we aren’t letting previous shots affect our future shots. It was a difficult night weather wise, but we are dealing with it and have a good opportunity next week to play a lot of golf.”
Team scores: South O’Brien 186, HMS 203.
Medals: Medalist, Alex Griebel (SO’), 43; 2nd, David Bottjen (SO’), 45; 3rd, Aiden Bush (HMS), 46; 4th, Derek Paulsen (SO’), 48.
Other HMS varsity scores: Eli Mastbergen 51, Kolby Douma 53, Talan Zearing 53, Jack Mastbergen 54, Blake Meendering 55.
