Hawk duo shine at WEC Girls Golf Tourney
Weather provided some challenges for the War Eagle Conference girls April 30 as they gathered for the conference tournament played on the red course at Willow Creek in Le Mars. Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn brought just two golfers, Gracie Knobloch and Kinsey Schirmer, but both finished in the top five, earning medals.
“The conference meet tested the girls as we started the meet, got rained out for 90 minutes and then restarted it, only playing nine holes,” commented Hawk head coach Cheryl Kroese. “Situations like that can be challenging and both Gracie and Kinsey responded well to the challenge. Couldn’t be more proud of them both! Gracie ended up in second place in the meet with a 45 and Kinsey ended in fifth place with a 47.”
Gehlen Catholic’s Rysaiah Sitzmann was the only golfer to go lower than Knobloch as she carded a 44. Addison Kovarna of Hinton fired a 45 and Akron-Westfield’s Josie Smith turned in a round of 46.
Hinton won the tourney with a 194 total. That was eight strokes lower than the score posted by second place Gehlen.
Scores from the conference tourney were used to determine the winner of the dual between the Hawks and Gehlen. The Jays’ winning score was 202. Sitzmann took medalist honors with her 44, but second place went to Knobloch and third to Schirmer.
