Hawk boys close out the golf season at Sectional Tourney

The golf season ended for Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn at the Class 1A Sectional Golf Tournament held May 8 at Otter Valley Country Club near George. The Hawks finished last in the seven-team field with a team total of 406 strokes.
“We played some stiff competition at sectionals,” noted HMS coach Mark Japenga. “Jack (Mastbergen) shot pretty good yesterday matching his conference score of 89. The kids improved in a lot of areas this year and we look forward to continuing to work on our skill sets and be even more competitive next year. We made some good strides from a year ago. But we need to put in some time on the course to continue the improvement so we can challenge every team we play next year.”
The other juniors on the team enjoyed various levels of success. Blake Meendering recorded an 18-hole total of 96. Aiden Bush came in at 114 and Slayton McCarter at 121. A pair of freshmen got their first tast of sectionals. Eli Mastbergen shot 108 and Kolby Douma 113.
Boyden-Hull and Gehlen Catholic each advance to District play. The Comets posted a score of 300 while Gehlen was at 331. Additional individuals qualifying for District play were Derek Paulsen of South O’Brien with a round of 82 and Wyatt Wittrock of Harris-Lake Park with an 84.
