Throwers excel for HMS boys at Sioux Central meet
The Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn track and field boys tuned up for the qualifying meet by taking part in Sioux Central’s meet May 6 at Sioux Rapids. HMS, with 75 total points, was fourth in the team standings behind the host Rebels, Pocahontas Area and Alta-Aurelia. The meet was stopped after the 400 meter hurdles.
The Hawks captured the two throwing events with Adam Schierholz winning the discus and Damion Hansen taking the shot put. Finishing second were Jacob Cates in the shot and George Vargas in the 3200 meter run.
The 400 meter dash saw Carter Dolphin place fourth and Ryan Grotluschen fifth. Other fifth-pace finishers were Easton Teal in the 3200, Nathaniel Ball in the 400 hurdles and Grotluschen in the 800. The top HMS relay was the 4×800 which finished fifth with Ball, Dolphin, Damian Dodge and Blaine Finster.
