Akron-Westfield clubs Hawks in four
Akron-Westfield put together a 14-run second inning on the way to beating Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn 25-1 in four innings. The War Eagle Conference baseball game was played June 3 at Akron.
Jack Mastbergen doubled in the first inning. Hunter Daggett followed suit with an RBI two-bagger to drive in Mastbergen. The other Hawk hit, a single, came off the bat of Lawton Schiphoff. Akron-Westfield pitchers Jackson Neubrand and Reegan McKee neither walked nor hit a batter but Blake Meendering and Jacob Cates did reach base courtesy of Westerner errors.
HMS used four pitchers on the night. Starter Dominic Tripp went 1-1/3 innings, giving up 12 runs on seven hits. Ten of the runs were earned. He walked four batters and hit two. Talan Zearing’s one inning of work included five earned runs on five hits and two walks. Lawton Schiphoff and Ricky Smith each tossed a third of an inning. Schiphoff allowed no hits but walked four and was charged with four earned runs. Smith’s four earned runs came on three hits and three walks. The Hawks committed four errors.
