Hawks get the win over George-Little Rock


Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn got back on the winning side of the ledger with a 3-2 victory over George-Little Rock June 7 at Hartley. HMS built a 3-0 lead and then held off the Mustangs to snap an eight-game losing streak and improve to 2-9 on the season.
The Hawks went up 1-0 in the second inning when Jacob Cates singled and came around to score. In the fourth HMS picked up two more runs to increase the lead to 3-0. Blake Meendering doubled in the inning to score both Grant Kunzman and Ricky Smith. George-Little Rock got on the board with a run in the fifth and added another run in the sixth.
Cates was 2-for-2 at the plate and was hit by a pitch. Meendering had the double and Hunter Daggett hit a single. Kunzman walked and was hit by a pitch. Smith was twice hit by a pitch and Aidan Espeland drew a walk.
Starting pitcher Jack Mastbergen went 5-1/3 innings to pick up the win. He allowed just one hit and struck out 10. Neither of the Mustang runs was earned. Mastbergen walked three batters and hit one. Cates tossed the final 1-2/3 innings in relief. He allowed a hit but struck out four of the six batters he faced. There were two Hawk errors.
