Two runs enough for George-Little Rock to beat Hawks

George-Little Rock scored two runs in the fourth inning and made it stand up as the Mustangs got past Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn 2-0 July 1 at George. With the loss HMS finishes 1-9 in the War Eagle Conference. The Hawks entered District Tournament play with a record of 3-18.
The Mustang fourth included a single, an RBI double and a run-scoring single. With three singles in the game, the Hawks had only two fewer hits than their hosts. Two of those hits came from Lawton Schiphoff. The other from Jacob Cates who also was hit by a pitch and reached base on an error.
It was Cates who took the loss for HMS. He pitched 3-2/3 innings before giving way to Caden Douma. Cates yielded the two runs and four of the hits. He struck out seven batters, walked one and hit one. Douma recorded four strikeouts to go along with one hit and one walk. The pitchers were backed up by an error-free Hawk defense.
