It’s too little, too late for Hawk bats in tourney loss to Emmetsburg

Emmetsburg scored early in its tourney matchup with Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn and the HMS bats were mostly silent until late. The E-Hawks kept up the pressure, scoring in five of their six innings, and dealt HMS a 9-3 season-ending loss. The Class 2A Region 2 opening round game was played July 8 at Emmetsburg. The Hawks finish the year with a record of 7-12.
“We didn’t hit the ball,” noted HMS head coach Stephanie Bronstad. “Kamryn (Ebel) pitched a great game and Delaney (Murphy) kept her engaged the whole time behind the plate. Out defense struggled at times but our bats could have made that up. As a coach, it’s hard knowing the potential you have as a team and not reaching that potential. The girls will need to work hard on the off season so we can come back stronger next year.”
It took until the seventh inning for the Hawks to finally get on the board. Emmetsburg had scored three runs in the first inning, two unearned runs in the second, single runs in both the third and fourth innings and then two more in the fifth.
In the top of the seventh Kinsey Schirmer led off with a single. Pinch hitter Natalie Daggett followed with a base hit and both runners advanced on an error. A bunt single by Addy Sheeler scored Schirmer. Murphy grounded out to the pitcher and Daggett was thrown out at home plate. Frankie Mohni drew a walk and a subsequent wild pitch moved Sheeler to third and Mohni to second. Ebel finished her at bat with a single to drive in Sheeler. A throw to second allowed Mohni to score. A strikeout, one of eight for HMS, ended the game.

Ebel also had a single in the sixth and finished with two hits. Lindsey Van Es recorded a bunt single in the first inning as part of the Hawks’ six-hit night. Ebel reached base on an error in the opening inning and Abby Otto and Sheeler each walked in the second. HMS stranded five runners while the E-Hawks left seven on base.
Ebel allowed 12 hits. Seven of the nine Emmetsburg runs were earned. Ebel walked three batters and struck out two. Each team committed two errors.
This was the final game for seniors Murphy, Otto and Schirmer.
