Hawks manage one win at Spencer Tourney
Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn officially began the volleyball season August 23 at Spencer, taking part in the Spencer Early Bird Tournament.
The Hawks’ pool also included Manson NW Webster and the tourney host Tigers.
HMS opened with Manson NW Webster and dropped the competitive first set 21-18. The Cougars won the second set as well by a more comfortable 21-13 margin.
In the next match, neither the Hawks nor Spencer could gain much of an advantage over the other during a first set battle. HMS emerged the victor 21-19. The second set was as one-sided as the first had been close. The Hawks earned the 2-0 match win by crushing Spencer 21-5.
After the Tigers defeated Manson NW Webster in three sets, each team in the pool had a 1-1 match record. The tiebreaker gave HMS second place and they moved on to face Okoboji, the runner-up from the other pool. The Pioneers went on a run early and another run late to take the first set 21-14. There were no such runs by either team in a tight second set. Okoboji scored the final two points of the set to slip past the Hawks 22-20.
In the match-up of first-place teams, Algona defeated Manson NW Webster 21-14 and 21-18.
HMS kill leaders against the Cougars were Kylee Schiphoff with five and Moriah Otto with four. Frankie Mohni recorded seven set assists. Schiphoff made a solo block and assisted with Otto on another. Lindsey Van Es came up with 12 digs. Mohni was 10-for-10 serving while Schiphoff served the lone ace.
The 18 kills against Spencer included five from Abby Douma and four from Schiphoff. Mohni assisted on 10 of the kills and also dug up eight balls. Eliza Tewes and Schiphoff each served 11-for-11. Tewes notched three ace serves, Schiphoff four and Mohni five.
Douma repeated as kills leader against Okoboji with five. Mohni supplied seven assists, had three of the team’s nine digs and assisted Schiphoff on a block. Tewes was 6-for-6 serving with an ace.
