Seventh-ranked Hinton downs Hawks in three

A tough Hinton squad visited Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn as the Hawks began War Eagle Conference play September 3 at Hartley. The Blackhawks, slotted seventh in Class 2A’s preseason volleyball rankings, looked the part as they swept HMS 25-12, 25-7 and 25-19.
Hinton put down 43 kills in 73 attempts with only four errors for a kill efficiency of .534. Blackhawk standout Bailey Boeve accounted for 18 of those kills in 23 attempts with only one error.
“Last night’s match was a great opportunity to go against a powerful team,” noted Hawk head coach Cheryl Kroese. “I was extremely pleased with how the girls came out and competed. I don’t feel like our first set score shows the effort the girls gave. Our serve receive play was very good and we were aggressive offensively. The second set we had a bit of a lull but came back the third set and played hard. The third set we were able to put up more kills offensively and get in on some blocks. Overall, I was very pleased with the efforts of our team and look forward to taking that type of play into our upcoming matches.”
Abby Douma and Kylie Schiphoff each delivered five kills to lead HMS. Another three kills came from Addy Sheeler while Frankie Mohni totaled 10 set assists. Ava Stammer and Douma teamed up for a pair of blocks. Lindey Van Es dug up 12 Hinton attacks with Mohni adding nine digs and Eliza Tewes seven.
The Hawks were successful on 38 of their 40 serve attempts to reach 95 percent efficiency. Schiphoff served 9-of-9 with an ace and Van Es was 7-of-7, also with an ace serve. Tewes and Mohni were each 6-of-6 and Kenadie Van Loon 3-of-3.
