Tigers slip past HMS boys in season opener
The boys basketball season tipped off for Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn and Trinity Christian with a non-conference game between the War Eagle Conference foes. Trinity was able to send the home crowd home happy by edging the Hawks 49-44 December 3 at Hull.
HMS produced 17 made baskets in 52 attempts to shoot 33 percent. The Tigers were 18-of-45 from the floor for 40 percent. The Hawks made double the number of three-point baskets (eight compared to four for Trinity) but were 2-of-6 at the free throw line while the Tigers went 9-for-11.
The Hawks got 13 points from Jayden Leth, nine from Jackson Vogt, eight from both Lawton Schiphoff and Isaac Schierholz and three each from Caden Douma and Kolby Douma. Schierholz passed for five assists and Vogt three. Carter Westra led the Tigers with 19 points.
Trinity was guilty of 20 turnovers. Vogt and Schierholz each made three steals. Caden Douma blocked two shots while Schiphoff, Leth and Schierholz each issued one rejection. The Hawks turned the ball over 14 times and totaled 21 rebounds. Grabbing three rebounds apiece were Schiphoff, Leth, Vogt and Schierholz.
