Strong first half sets HMS girls up for win over Royals

A 20-point halftime lead translated into a second victory of the week as Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn defeated MMCRU 64-48 December 6 at Hartley. The non-conference victory in the game between War Eagle Conference teams lifted the Hawks’ record to 3-1.
HMS led 32-12 after two quarters. The Royals put together their best quarter of the game in the third where they outscored their hosts 23-16. The Hawks scored 16 points again in the final quarter but held MMCRU to 13.
Kylee Schiphoff fired in all three of the HMS three-point baskets on the way to a 24-point night. Moriah Otto scored 13 points and Gracie Knobloch and Abby Douma each tallied eight. Lindsey Van Es and Eliza Tewes scored five points apiece. Frankie Mohni added one point and a team-high four assists.
The Hawks shot 36 percent with 19 baskets in 53 tries. They attempted a whopping 39 free throws and made 23 of them. HMS committed 26 turnovers.
Big on the boards were Otto with 11 rebounds, Douma with eight and Schiphoff with seven. On offense, the Royals kept challenging Douma and she responded to the tune of eight blocked shots. Schiphoff managed to come away with seven steals.
