Wrestling teams from around the State of Iowa – plus one from Kansas – joined Okoboji/HMS and host OABCIG at the Herb Irgens Invitational conducted January 24 and 25 at Ida Grove. The Pioneers scored 67 points to finish 11th in the 26-team event won by perennial wrestling power Don Bosco of Gilbertville and their 237 total.
Tyce Hanson wrestled well enough to place second at 132 pounds and was the top finisher for Okoboji/HMS. Grapplers from HMS competing were Nathan Stofferan at 113, who finished seventh, and Riley Mattingly, who did not place at 215.
Stofferan received a bye into round two where he won by technical fall (16-0) over Ramsey Fergen of Sergeant Bluff-Luton in 4:14. The quarterfinal saw Stofferen pinned by Sioux Center’s Bryce Oostenink in 3:31. Moving into the consolation bracket, the HMS wrestler scored a 15-0 technical fall victory over Trenton Anderson of West Lyon in 2:00. Stofferan then lost by fall to Southeast Valley’s Wyatt Blair in 4:46. In the 7th Place Match, Stofferan again scored a technical fall, winning 17-2 over Kase Kraft of South Central Calhoun in 4:31.
Mattingly also got a bye into round two. He then met Carter Wright of Woodbury Central who pinned Mattingly in 13 seconds. Another bye sent Mattingly into round three of the consolations where his day ended with a loss by fall to Carroll’s Miles Bluml in 25 seconds.
