Buzzer-beater gives HMS girls one-point win over Tigers

Kylee Schiphoff hit the game-winning shot at the final buzzer to lift Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn to a 39-38 triumph over Trinity Christian January 31 at Hartley. The thrilling win elevated HMS above the .500 mark in the War Eagle Conference at 5-4. The Hawks raised their season record to 12-7.
The Tigers scored a basket with four seconds remaining in regulation to take a 38-37 lead. After a timeout, HMS inbounded the ball on the baseline with three seconds left. Several crisp passes got the ball upcourt to Schiphoff at the free throw line and she banked in the jumper from straightaway as time expired.

“We never had a set play on what to do for the final three seconds so I wasn’t necessarily expecting to have the final shot,” said Schiphoff. “When the shot left my hand, I felt like I was in slow motion and it took forever to see if the ball went in. When the shot went in, I didn’t know what to do. I was so excited and happy that we came up with the win and was overly happy that I had my teammates cheering for me and was just as excited, if not more, that I made the last second shot!”
It was only the third field goal of the night for Schiphoff as neither team could find a consistent groove offensively. The Hawks trailed by five points at halftime but were back within one entering the fourth quarter. Moriah Otto and Frankie Mohni each scored five points in the final quarter as HMS took a 37-34 lead. Two Tiger baskets with a steal in between set up the late Hawk heroics.
Mohni finished with 11 points, Otto nine and Schiphoff seven. Gracie Knobloch and Lindsey Van Es each tallied five with Abby Douma adding two. Knobloch registered three assists and Schiphoff and Otto two each.
Each team had 15 made field goals. The Hawks shot 23 percent and Trinity 28 percent with five treys and two treys respectively. The Tigers were 6-of-8 at the free throw line and HMS 4-of-5.
The turnovers were even with 14 for each team and the Hawks enjoyed a slight 45-40 edge in rebounds. Knobloch made four steals, Schiphoff three and Van Es two. The top rebounders were Douma with 14 boards and Otto with 12. Douma blocked nine shots.
