Hawks fall 21-0 to Gehlen but it’s not football


Gehlen Catholic remained undefeated in War Eagle Conference action with a 21-0 win over Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn June 18 at Hartley. It was a combination of hits (12) and free bases (14) plus one-hit pitching by the Jays that helped produce the football-like score in the four-inning game.
Mason Puetz and Drake Hodgson combined for the one-hitter. The hit came off the bat of Caden Douma. Anthony Olvera drew a walk to get on base.
Lawton Schiphoff was given the mound assignment and he pitched into the third inning, allowing 12 runs on five hits. Five of the runs were earned. Schiphoff walked seven batters and hit one. Talen Zearing took over and pitched a third of an inning which included four earned runs on two hits and two walks. J.W. Van Der Merwe finished up, yielding five earned runs on five hits. He struck out one batter, walked one and hit three. There were two Hawk errors.
