West Sioux pulls away from Hawks to get WEC win
West Sioux broke a 4-all tie with nine runs in the fourth inning to top Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn 15-4 June 20 at Hartley. The Falcons scored their final two runs in the fifth inning. When HMS was unable to answer in the bottom of the frame the game ended there. The Hawks saw their War Eagle Conference mark fall to 0-7. Overall they are 0-11.
HMS took a 2-0 lead in the first inning. The Hawk scoring showed Grant Kunzman leading off with a walk and Caden Douma and Hunter Daggett each following with a base hit. After Douma was out at second, Lawton Schiphoff walked to load the bases. Blake Meendering followed with a two-run single, scoring Kunzman and Daggett.
West Sioux responded with a four-run second. In the bottom of the inning both James Carlin and Mykle Meyers drew walks. With two outs Daggett singled to drive in Carlin.
The Hawks tied the score in the bottom of the third. Blake Meendering doubled and went to third on a balk. A wild pitch then allowed him to come home. Both Blake and Brody Meendering singled in the fifth inning but they were each left stranded.
Starting pitcher Douma went three-plus innings, allowing five runs (two earned) on three hits. He struck out five batters, walked four and hit three. Kunzman relieved him and pitched 1-1/3 innings which yielded 10 runs (seven earned) on five hits. He struck out two batters, walked two and hit three. Riley Mattingly tossed two-thirds of an inning and walked two batters. HMS was guilty of four errors.
