Hawks drop two to South O’Brien

Runs were hard to come by for Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn as the Hawks lost both games of a doubleheader to South O’Brien. The first game was begun June 2 at Hartley but was suspended due to lightning with HMS trailing 3-0. It was resumed June 30 at Paullina prior to the regularly scheduled game. The final score of the first game was 13-1 and the nightcap ended up 16-0 in four innings.

This was the game between the two teams that counted in the War Eagle Conference standings. The Hawks got on the board in the fifth inning. With one out James Carlin singled and Talen Zearing drew a walk. Hunter Daggett delivered a two-out single and Carlin was safe at home plate on a close play. Daggett had three of the Hawks’ four hits in the game, including a double in the seventh.
Grant Kunzman, Lawton Schiphoff and Caden Douma all pitched for HMS. Nine of the Wolverines’ runs were earned, coming on 11 hits. The trio walked a total of nine batters, struck out seven and hit one. The Hawks committed three errors.

South O’Brien scored nine runs in the third inning to sew up the victory in game two. For HMS, Blake Meendering went 2-for-2 at the plate. Jack Mastbergen hit a double while Brody Meendering and Carlin each had a single. Schiphoff, Douma, Carlin and Anthony Olvera each drew a walk. Kunzman was hit by a pitch.
Mastbergen got the pitching start and went 2-1/3 innings. He yielded only one hit but walked 10 to go along with two strikeouts and one hit batter. The nine runs he allowed were all earned. Daggett tossed 2/3 of an inning which included seven earned runs, five hits and three walks. There was just one Hawk error.
