Season ends for Hawk boys at Sectional Golf Tourney
The Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn boys golf team saw its season come to a close at the Class 1A Sectional Golf Tournament held May 14 at Rolling Hills Country Club north of Hull. The Hawks finished fifth in the seven-team field with a team total of 383 strokes. Only the top three teams qualify for the District Tournament, along with the top two overall individual players from among the non-qualifying teams.
“We competed very well,” said HMS coach Mark Japenga. “We had our chances to get a couple at large qualifiers but fell a little short. I am very appreciative of how the kids battled and stayed mentally tough. This group had a wonderful attitude and represented HMS well. I really enjoyed them and it was a very enjoyable golf season.”
Senior Aiden Bush recorded the Hawks’ low 18-hole score of 92. Sophomore Eli Mastbergen was next with a 94, followed by senior Jack Mastbergen with a 91. Sophomore Kolby Douma carded a 101, senior Blake Meendering a 102 and junior Lawton Schiphoff a 104.
