Missed scoring opportunities hurt HMS in loss to Tigers

Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn left too many runners on base to be able to keep up with Trinity Christian. The Hawks stranded 12 in a 14-8 loss June 4 at Hartley.
HMS had eight hits and drew nine walks in the game. Freshman Lexi Schmillen got her first pitching start and went the distance.
“The girls played a better game,” assessed Hawk head coach Stephanie Bronstad. “Seems we are finding the right people in better positions. Lexi pitched a good first varsity game! We were very happy as coaches with her performance. The girls hit the ball better but we left too many on base when it counted.”
Seven of the eight HMS hits were doubles. Eliza Tewes had the lone single. Gracie Knobloch went 3-for-5 with two RBI’s and two runs scored. Tewes was 2-for-5. She also scored twice and knocked in a pair of runs with her first-inning two-bagger.
Lindsey Van Es doubled in the sixth inning and was driven home by Kamryn Ebel’s double. Mahkenzie Mattingly stroked her double in the fourth. Frankie Mohni got aboard four times and scored two runs. Cammy Wilson picked up an RBI on a groundout in the first inning.
Schmillen threw 156 pitches in her varsity debut with 87 of them being strikes. She gave up 12 hits. Eight of the runs were earned. Schmillen struck out four batters and walked eight.
Each team committed three errors. The Tigers left seven runners on base.
