HMS girls just miss advancing in Regional golf
Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn finished one place away from moving on as Primghar Golf & Country Club entertained eight schools at the Class 1A Region 1A Golf Tournament May 17. Central Lyon won the meet with a 388 total. The host Wolverines were next at 422. MMCRU turned in a 457 and HMS was next at 462.
“HMS came up just short of moving on today, missing out by five strokes,” said Hawk head coach Cheryl Kroese. “Only two teams move on typically from regionals to the next level, but since (host) South O’Brien was one of the top two teams, a third team also moves to the next level. Overall I was very pleased with the girls.”
Holstein is the location of regional second round May 24. In addition to Central Lyon, South O’Brien and MMCRU, individuals qualifying were Tatum Jensen of Central Lyon (round of 87) and Kaeley Einck of South O’Brien (95), followed by four more from Central Lyon, Isabelle Schneidermann (96), Mariah Gerleman (100), Cameryn Van Holland (105) and Amelia Schneidermann (106), and finally Zella Ingham of Harris-Lake Park (106).
Elle Mastbergen and Emily Sindt tied for the low HMS round over the 18 holes. Each shot a 113. Not far behind were Kinsey Schirmer with a 117 and Elise Haack with a 119.
Added Kroese, “I’m sad for the girls that we didn’t get the opportunity to play in the second round of regionals, but I’m also proud of them for their overall finish of fourth today. I’ve really enjoyed working with this great group of ladies all season and wish my three seniors (Darby Mastbergen, Elle Mastbergen, Emily Sindt) the best of luck. We will miss them all!”
