HMS runs at Chris Smith Invitational
Last week included a second competition for Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn’s cross country runners as they ran at Sioux Central’s Chris Smith Invitational September 16. The event is held at the Little Sioux Golf & Country Club in Sioux Rapids.
The Hawk boys managed a 10-place finish and a score of 299. The boys winner was Okoboji with a 45 and their neighbor Spirit Lake scored a 57 to take second.
HMS was paced by George Vargas who finished 33rd. Bryce Dodge placed 50th, Aiden Bush 53rd, Blaine Finster 54th, Ryan Grotluschen 62nd, Aiden Jensen 63rd and Damian Dodge 74th. In the JV race Gavin Faulkner placed 34th.
The Hawk girls wound up eighth with a score of 221. Sibley-Ocheyedan’s score of 51 earned the Generals first place. Madison Otto earned a medal after finishing 14th. “Madi has medaled in most of the meets we’ve run in so that’s fantastic,” commented HMS head coach Kyle Borchers. The other placings for the HMS runners showed Kamryn Ebel in 38th, Gracie Knobloch in 60th, Juliana Pasillas in 64th and Ashleigh Vermeer in 65th.
Borchers assessed the season so far saying, “Were running pretty good. The guys have run pretty well as a team. It’s usually George and Bryce vying to be first for us. It’s kind of gone back and forth and that’s good to push the competition. The girls are not quite there one through five. We did manage to beat South O’Brien. It’s always nice to beat somebody in the War Eagle Conference.”
