Ethan Wiersma Grabs The Leg Of Estherville Lincoln Central’s Cade Crees In An Effort To Turn The Sectional Match In His Favor. Wiersma Would Eventually Lose By A 4 3 Decision.

Nick Bronstad and James Gellerman were among five Okoboji/HMS wrestlers who punched their tickets for the Districts with their performances at the Class 2A Sectional Tournament held February 5 at Estherville. Bronstad, an HMS senior, won the 285-pound weight class while Gellerman, a freshman at HMS, finished second at 182.
Second place wrestlers with Okoboji ties were Tyce Hanson at 113 pounds, Caleb Jones at 126 and Sam Pas at 220. They along with Bronstad and Gellerman advance to the Class 2A District meet to be held Saturday, February 12 at Webster City beginning at 11:00 a.m.
Another HMS grappler, sophomore Ethan Wiersma, finished fourth for Okoboji/HMS at 195 pounds.
The Pioneers were third in the team standings with 159 points. The team champion was Webster City with a 229 total.
Bronstad received a bye to move directly into the semifinals. There he pinned Jess Christensen of Estherville-Lincoln Central. He faced Daniel Chavez of Clarion-Goldfield-Dows in the 1st Place Match and won by fall in 2:54.
Gellerman also got a bye into the semis where he lost by fall to the eventual champion, Deontez Williams of Pocahontas Area. He stayed alive by winning his 3rd Place Match by fall over Webster City’s Dylan Burnette-Bingham. Gellerman got the chance to wrestle back for second place and he took advantage of the opportunity by winning a 4-0 decision in a match he controlled against Nash Lienemann of Clarion-Goldfield-Dows.
Wiersma got off to a good start with a 9-7 quarterfinal win by decision against Algona’s Hunter Kollasch. He was pinned in the semis by CJ Hisler of Webster City. Wiersma’s season ended when he was decisioned 4-3 by ELC’s Cade Crees in the 3rd Place Match.
