Pitching and defense seals Hawks’ softball win over Trinity Christian
Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn scored early and didn’t allow Trinity Christian any big innings in beating the Tigers 7-4 June 1 at Hull. The Hawks opened the scoring with five runs in the second inning, added one in the third and got an insurance run in the sixth after Trinity had cut the lead to 6-4.
“The girls pulled out another win,” commented HMS head coach Stephanie Bronstad. “The bats came out right away and then cooled off but our pitching and defense won the game. Kamryn (Ebel) pitched a great game, letting them hit and trusting the defense behind her. The girls battled and stayed positive!”
Ebel fanned 13 batters in going the full seven innings. She allowed seven hits. All four of the Tiger runs were earned. Ebel issued no walks but did hit a batter.
The Hawk second began with a walk to Bailey VerHelst, who advanced to second base on a passed ball. Eliza Tewes singled and went to second on an error that allowed VerHelst to score. Addison Sheeler rapped a base hit and Abby Otto walked to load the bases. Kinsey Schirmer singled home Tewes and Gracie Knobloch followed with a two-run single before Schirmer came home with the fifth run of the inning.
HMS added a run in the third. VerHelst singled and Abby Kunzman bunted her way on. Tewes was hit by a pitch to fill the bases. Meghan Larson followed with a single that scored VerHelst. Trinity got their first run in the bottom of the third then added two more in the fourth and another in the fifth.
Knobloch doubled with on out in the sixth, her fourth hit of the game. She went to third when a third strike to VerHelst got past the catcher. An error allowed Knobloch to score that insurance run.
The Hawks committed just one error while Trinity was guilty of three. The Tigers left five runners on base and HMS stranded eight.
HMS 0 5 1 0 0 1 0 – 7
