Hawks struggle in WEC opener against Harris-Lake Park
Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn played its first War Eagle Conference game of the season May 26 when it traveled to Lake Park. Harris-Lake Park held the Hawks to just one hit in a 10-0 five-inning win.
The HMS single came in the third inning off the bat of Trenton Vollink. The Hawks managed three other baserunners. Jacob Cates drew a walk in first inning. Tanner Tesch reached on an error in fourth. Evan Eilers got aboard in the fifth when the Wolves’ catcher let a third strike get past him.
Lucas Ahrenstorff pitched the five innings for HLP. He struck out 11 batters and issued just the one walk.
Cates got the start for the Hawks and tossed three plus innings. He yielded nine runs on six hits with seven strikeouts and a half-dozen walks. Six of the runs were earned. Eilers relieved Cates four batters into the fourth inning. He fanned three of the five Wolves he faced while also allowing one hit and an unearned run. HMS committed four of its seven errors while Eilers was on the mound.
