Mustangs reverse early HMS momentum to win 3-0
George-Little Rock entered its contest with Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn on a four-match win streak in the War Eagle Conference. Planning to end that streak, HMS was within two points of taking the first set September 26 at Hartley but the Mustangs rallied to win 25-23. George-Little Rock then captured the next two sets by scores of 25-17 and 25-16 to improve to 5-1 in their first year of WEC play.
“I was very impressed with the attitude of how our girls came out in our first set,” stated Hawk head coach Cheryl Kroese. “We did a nice job of getting the ball in position to get an attack out of our offense. I really felt if we could have gotten that first set to swing our direction, we could have taken the match. The late rally by GLR kind of took the wind out of our sails. If you look at the breakdown of stats, we had almost twice the kill attempts in the first set versus the second and third. With the injury to Kinsey (Schirmer) late in practice on Monday, we didn’t have a lot of time to work through a new lineup and so we struggled a bit late in the game to work through some of those unknown situations.”
Kylee Schiphoff was the most effective attacker with nine kills and an efficiency of .318. Abby Douma added five kills and Addison Sheeler three. Frankie Mohni recorded 14 assists and Moriah Otto four. Abigail Otto dug up 16 Mustang attacks and Douma and Mohni combined on a block. HMS had four unsuccessful serves and four ace serves. Moriah Otto was 17-of-17 with one of the aces. Schiphoff and Eliza Tewes were each 8-of-8 and Schiphoff delivered an ace. Abigail Otto served seven-of-seven with an ace. The other ace serve came from Lindsey Van Es.
