Strong second quarter propels Trinity past HMS boys


Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn struggled to score on Trinity Christian during the middle two quarters and lost to the Tigers 61-35 December 1 at Hartley. Trinity won the second quarter 20-5. The Hawks concluded the season’s first week at 0-3.
HMS was 12-of-54 for the game to shoot 22 percent. The Hawks made four of 20 three point tries and were 7-of-12 from the free throw line. The Tigers shot 44 percent with 24 baskets in 54 attempts. They were 0-for-5 from long range and 13-for-16 at the line.
Bradley Van Beek tallied nine points with Lawton Schiphoff adding eight, George Vargas seven, Jayden Leth five, Zach Pearson four and Josh Cruz two. Cruz also assisted on two baskets.
HMS was outrebounded 41-27. Leth was the leading Hawk rebounder with seven boards. Van Beek and Vargas each collected five caroms. Vargas recorded three blocks and two steals. Leth also made two steals and Van Beek blocked two shots. The Hawks committed 14 turnovers compared to 17 for Trinity.
