Persistence pays off for Hawk girls in win over South O’Brien
Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn rebounded from its first-half shooting woes to defeat South O’Brien 46-38 January 16 at Paullina. The Hawks trailed 22-10 at halftime but then started hitting their shots while crashing the boards for the shots that didn’t go in.
“We really didn’t make any adjustments at halftime,” noted HMS head coach Ashley Tessum. “We were taking good shots, but they just weren’t falling for us. The only thing I told the girls we needed to improve on during halftime was rebounding – especially crashing the boards on the weak side. Other than that, I just told them to keep shooting when they were open and that’s exactly what they did. I’m very proud of them for keeping their heads up despite being behind at half and our lack of scoring. They battled back every second of the second half to come away with the win!”
Abby Douma grabbed 19 rebounds – including 10 on the offensive glass – and scored 12 points. She also blocked seven shots and made two steals. Frankie Mohni and Kylee Schiphoff each connected on three treys and finished with 11 and 10 points respectively. Gracie Knobloch hit the other long-range jumper for three of her seven points. Eliza Tewes added six points. The assists leaders were Knobloch with four and Moriah Otto with three. Otto also pulled down nine rebounds while Schiphoff had four shot blocks.
For the game HMS was 17-of-71 from the floor for 24 percent. The Wolverines shot 21 percent with 12 baskets in 57 tries. They were 3-of-18 from three-point range and 11-of-19 from the free throw line. The Hawks sank five of their eight charity tosses. The turnover totals showed HMS with 16 and their hosts with 24.
