Hawks bunch their hits and runs to defeat West Sioux

Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn scored in just two of the seven innings but it was enough to earn a 5-4 victory over West Sioux June 14 at Ireton. HMS got three runs in the third inning and followed that up with two in the fourth. The win was the first for the Hawks since their opening game and is their initial War Eagle Conference victory to go with five losses. Their overall record improved to 2-9.
The Falcons got on the board first with a run in the second. The HMS third featured five hits. It actually started with a walk to Addy Sheeler but then Delaney Murphy doubled and Frankie Mohni plated Sheeler with a single. A Kamryn Ebel base hit drove in Murphy and Kinsey Schirmer’s single brought in Mohni. The fifth hit of the inning came off the bat of Eliza Tewes.
The fourth inning again began with a walk, this time to Lindsey Van Es. Sheeler followed with a base hit and Van Es scored on an error by the left fielder. Sheeler was able to come home on an RBI groundout from Mohni and HMS led 5-1. The Falcons got a run in the fifth and then drew within a run by scoring twice in the sixth. All three of those runs were unearned due to a passed ball and two errors.
“Pulled a win out tonight,” commented Hawk head coach Stephanie Bronstad. “We lost a little of our lead in the end and made it harder than it needed to be, but still a Win. We had some good batting innings but need to dominate on the bats the whole game. Our pitching was good but just like defense and batting, we can always improve and grow and minimize.”

The winning pitcher was Gracie Knobloch. Her seven innings of work included 10 strikeouts to go along with four hits and five walks. Again, only the run in the second inning was earned. HMS had three errors in all.
On the offensive side, all six of the Hawk hits came in the two scoring innings. The Hawks left four runners on base while West Sioux stranded five.
