The Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn girls track and field team had their usual share of high placings at the Wolverine Relays but also showcased some familiar faces in unfamiliar places.
In the event held May 5 at Paullina, Emily Mutombo won the long jump and was third in the 100 meters just behind Jasmine Lux. The 4×100 placed first as Mutombo and Lux teamed up with Lydia Harders and Abby Otto. The latter duo also hooked up with Anna VanVeen and Kylee Schiphoff to capture the 4×200.
Not such common sights were distance runner Madison Otto taking on the 400 meter hurdles event or hurdler and 400 meter runner VanderVeen competing in the JV shot put. The Wolverine Relays also featured the debut of the all-Otto sprint medley relay team. Placing sixth were Megan, Emily, Abby and Madison.
The Hawks finished fifth in the team standings with 68 points. In the battle for first, it was Alta-Aurelia scoring 117 points and Sioux Central tallying 116.
