Hawks explode for 16 runs in romp over Harris-Lake Park
After scoring just one run in the first two games, Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn came to life at the plate in a big way. The Hawks tallied multiple runs in all four innings of a 16-4 blowout victory over Harris-Lake Park May 27 at Hartley. It was the first War Eagle Conference game for the Hawks, who improved to 1-2 on the young season.
Leading the hit parade with three apiece were Cadence Klein, Bailey VerHelst and Abby Kunzman. Gracie Knobloch tossed all four innings to pick up the pitching win. She walked seven batters but also fanned seven. All four runs were earned.
“Great game tonight,” exclaimed HMS head coach Stephanie Bronstad. “Gracie executed well on the mound. The ladies attacked the ball hard in the batter’s box and ran the bases well. I’m very happy with the way they played and looking forward to them continuing next week.”
Klein singled and scored in the second inning. Her third-inning double drove in two runs. She added an RBI single in the fourth and scored the final run. VerHelst delivered two run singles in both of the first two innings. She added a fifth RBI with a double in the fourth inning. Kunzman contributed RBI singles in both the first and third innings. She also bunted her way on base in the second.
Kinsey Schirmer singled twice, walked, reached on a fielder’s choice and scored four runs. Also scoring four times was Knobloch. She hit a double and a single to go along with a pair of walks. Meghan Larson doubled and scored in the first inning and walked and scored in the third.
In all, there were 14 hits for the Hawks. In the field, HMS played error-free ball.
