Two big innings power Harris-Lake Park past Hawks
Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn’s boys couldn’t be blamed if they felt a bit like a serving of cold cuts. The three HMS runs were sandwiched between two big innings by Harris-Lake Park as the Wolves captured the War Eagle Conference baseball match-up 15-3 in five innings May 27 at Hartley. The Hawks fell to 0-1 in the conference and 1-2 overall.
HLP put up five runs in the first inning then went silent for the next three. HMS scored a run in the third and two more in the fourth to draw within two runs at 5-3. That simply set up a fifth inning in which the Wolves plated 10 runs. The Hawks were unable to push any runs across in the bottom of the inning, ending the game.
Trenton Vollink scored two of the HMS runs. He singled in the third inning and walked in the fourth. Both times he came home on a sacrifice fly, the first by Jacob Cates and the second by Keaton Graves. Tanner Tesch had two hits, one in the third and one in the fifth. Graves notched a single in the first and Tyson Tessum recorded the fifth, and final, hit in the fifth. In the fourth inning Tessum drew a walk and later scored on an error. Jordan Ortega drew a pair of walks and his courtesy runner, Jonny Ortiz, stole two bases. The Hawks left nine runners on base.
Ortega was the starting and losing pitcher. His 4-1/3 inning stint yielded eight runs (four earned) on four hits with four walks, three strikeouts and a hit batter. Nick Bronstad relieved Ortega with one out in the fifth. His pitching line showed seven runs (all earned) on five hits, four walks, a strikeout and a hit batter. There were five HMS errors.
