Third quarter is key as MMCRU defeats Hawk girls
MMCRU won the third quarter and went on to win the game, downing Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn 55-45 January 13 at Marcus. HMS trailed by just three points at intermission, but was outscored 13-4 in the third quarter. The Hawks fell to 0-5 in War Eagle Conference play and 0-10 on the season.
For the second straight game, it was Abby Douma leading HMS in scoring. She was 9-for-11 from the floor and 1-for-1 at the free throw line to finish with 19 points. The rest of the Hawks made just nine of 39 shots for 23 percent. Moriah Otto finished with six points, Elise Haack and Kylee Schiphoff five apiece, Emily Mutombo four and Gracie Knobloch and Frankie Mohni three each. Knobloch was the assists leader with two.
Knobloch made five steals and blocked a shot. Hitting the boards were Mutombo, with eight rebounds, and Schiphoff, with seven.
Kora Alesch enjoyed a big night for the Royals, scoring 34 points.
Overall. HMS was 18-of-50 from the field, making 4-of-18 three-point tries. The Royals were 20-of-51 (39 percent) including 4-of-16 from downtown. The Hawks canned 5-of-11 free throws while MMCRU was 11-of-15 at the line. The Royals were guilty of 13 turnovers with HMS committing 17.
