The Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn track and field girls got in their final competitition before the War Eagle Conference meet with an appearance at the John Larson Relays held April 27 at Armstrong. HMS was sixth with 52 points in the meet won by Northwood-Kensett, which totaled 119. Host North Union was second with 110 points.
“In Armstrong last night we saw a lot of success,” commented Hawk coach Kirsten Taylor. “Many of our athletes ran new season’s or personal bests, which is always a great confidence boost moving towards the conference meet. Megan Otto took home second place in the high jump. Frankie Mohni also took home a runner up finish in the 400 meter hurdles. Evelyn Steffen finished fifth in the 400 meter dash with a new personal best. Jocelyn Abonce also finished fifth in the 800 meter run with a new season’s best. Lexi Croatt ran the 1500 meters to a sixth place finish. Payton Diehm also finished sixth in the long jump. Our relays were highlighted by a third place finish from our 4×800 (Abonce, Kam Ebel, Clara Funk, Croatt). Our 4×100 relay (Pam Mutombo, Diehm, Moriah Otto, Abby Otto) finished sixth, along with our 4×200 relay (Mohnie, Diehm, Moriah Otto, A. Otto). There was an overall great effort given by all. Times are going down and distances in the field are consistently getting further, which is exactly where we want to be right now.”
