Hawk boys qualify two events for State Track & Field Meet
Three seniors look to be closing out their track time at Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn on the Blue Oval. Ryan Borden, Ethan Diehm and Korey Ebel have all earned a trip to Des Moines and Drake Stadium’s famous track thanks to their performance at the Class 2A State Qualifying Meet held May 11 at Sheldon.
Ebel earned his way to this week’s State Track & Field Meet with a second-place finish in the 400 meter dash. The time of 44.09 by the fourth-place 4×100 relay qualified Ebel and his relay teammates Borden, Diehm and sophomore James Gellerman.
The 4×100 group turned in their best time of the year. The same could be said for the fifth place 4×200 where Jr Araiza joined Borden, Diehm and Gellerman. Going one better was the sprint medley relay which set a school record with a time of 1:36.78. That seventh-place relay featured Borden, Diehm, Gellerman and Ebel.
Personal records were established by Adam Schierholz in the discus (third place), Bradley Zamudio in the 400 meter hurdles (fourth), Borden in the 100 meter dash (sixth) and Bryce Dodge in the 1600 meter run (11th).
“I could not have been more proud of our kids in the State Qualifying meet in Sheldon,” stated HMS boys track coach Jay Eilers. “We have many yearly PR’s and even broke a school record in the sprint medley relay. Our meet had to be one of the fastest meets around with extremely talented athletes and it brought out the best in us. We would love to have all these events qualify for State, but to see our athletes continue to improve and compete at the level they did is all we can ask for. It was awesome to watch them and celebrate their PR’s. We are excited to see what our guys can do in Des Moines on a special stage. As always, they will compete their tails off and represent HMS in a phenomenal way.”
Other notable finishes by the Hawks included Diehm placing fifth in the long jump and Ryan Grotluschen coming in eighth in the 800. Grotluschen joined Jose Perez, Blaine Finster and Damian Dodge on the 4×800 relay which finished seventh. Placing ninth were Gellerman in the 100, Zamudio in the 400 meter dash and George Vargas in the 3200.
