Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn’s track and field boys tuned up for the upcoming qualifying meet by participating in the Sioux Central Coed Meet held May 8 at Sioux Rapids. The final two events, the 4×100 and 4×400 relays were not run due to inclement weather. Also, the 1600 meter run was not counted as there was interference by non-runners.
The 3200 meters counted for George Vargas as he won the event. Runner-up finishes were recorded by Adam Schierholz in the discus, Ethan Diehm in the long jump and James Gellerman in the 100 meter dash.
Ryan Borden placed third in the 100 meters as did Ryan Grotluschen in the 800. Borden then joined Diehm, Gellerman and Bradley Zamudio on the third-place 4×200 relay. That same group had earlier finished third in the sprint medley relay.
Zamudio placed fourth in the 400 meter hurdles as did Evan Eilers in the discus.
The Hawks’ 80 team points earned them fifth place. The host Rebels captured first with 122 total points.
