HMS splits doubleheader with MMCRU
Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn and MMCRU played a varsity doubleheader May 24 at Remsen. The two teams split on the night with the Royals winning the opener 10-0 and HMS coming back to capture the nightcap 6-3. It is the second game, in which the Hawks were the home team on the scoreboard, that will count in the War Eagle Conference standings.
“The bats came alive in both games,” commented HMS head coach Stephanie Bronstad. “In the first game we had to take a loss to let Kamryn (Ebel) get comfortable on the mound again. We had some errors that we couldn’t recover from but overall played well in both games. We ran the bases aggressive and pulled out the conference win. Gracie pitched well in the second game. The girls are working hard and fighting for the wins!”
In the first game MMCRU outhit the Hawks by only one – 10-9 – but the Royals took advantage of walks and hit batters to post 10 runs. The Royals scored three times in the bottom of the sixth to end the game.
Ebel walked four batters and also hit four. She struck out two and allowed seven earned runs. Seven different Hawks recorded one hit and Delaney Murphy had two. Notching one hit each were Cadence Klein, Abby Otto, Gracie Knobloch, Eliza Tewes, Alexis Grover, Morgan Grooters and Ebel. MMCRU stranded nine runners and the Hawks eight. The Royals committed three errors, one more than HMS.

Kinsey Schirmer’s three hits included an RBI double in the fourth. Murphy’s fourth-inning double drove in both Schirmer and Gracie Knobloch, who was walked intentionally for the second time in the game. Murphy followed that with a two-run single in the sixth. That hit plated Knobloch, who had singled, and Abby Otto, who had reached on an error. In all, HMS had 12 hits, including contributions from Otto and Abby Kunzman.
Knobloch went the distance again. She struck out 12 batters and walked just three. She yielded eight hits and three earned runs.
