Hawks dominate Harris-Lake Park for second WEC win
Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn notched win number two in the War Eagle Conference with a 3-0 victory over Harris-Lake Park October 5 at Lake Park. The Hawks, who have five conference losses, won 25-17, 25-8 and 25-13.
HMS jumped out to a 5-0 lead in the match. The Hawks later led by eight at 19-11 and went on to win the first set by that margin. HMS was on top 4-3 in set two before going on a 15-0 run to take a 19-3 lead. In the third and final set, HMS moved in front 9-8 and never looked back.
“We came out strong last night!,” declared HMS head coach Cheryl Kroese. “Our serving was the best it’s been all year, as we recorded 17 aces on the night. I didn’t feel like we ever struggled in the match. We jumped out to a lead in the first set, held on to it and put the ball down when we needed to. From there we just got stronger in sets two and three. So very proud of the ladies for their attitudes and efforts. The confidence boost will allow us to continue to build as we get into the final week of the season next week.
Abby Douma recorded nine kills in 13 attacks with only one error for a kill efficiency of .615. Kylee Schiphoff was next with five kills. Frankie Mohni totaled 15 set assists.
Douma also made two solo blocks and Schiphoff had one. The leaders in digs were Kinsey Schirmer and Abigail Otto, each with five. Coming up with two digs apiece were Lindsey Van Es, Kya Christofferson, Schiphoff and Mohni.
Serving four aces each were Schirmer, Mohni, Moriah Otto and Eliza Tewes. Schirmer was 14-of-14 serving, M. Otto 12-of-12, Tewes 19-of-20 and Schiphoff 13-of-14 with one ace.
